How It Works · Method

Send us your text. Get structure back.

Cascade is a presentation layer that runs inside your product, parsing structure, reshaping text, and making meaning easier to reach. Your words stay untouched.

The Process

Two steps you handle.
Two steps we do.

Two of these four steps happen automatically, inside Cascade: you only handle the first and the last.

Cascade-Shaped Text

Four rules. Every sentence.

Cascade applies the same rules to every sentence, providing consistent visual cues to help readers see meaning more easily.

Related words stay together.

The subject and its verb stay anchored at the same point, even when a phrase steps in between them.

Nested details step in.

A phrase that modifies another phrase sits one step deeper — depth on the page matches depth in the sentence.

Setup phrases step aside.

An opening phrase is set apart from the main clause, so a reader can tell it's a lead-in before reaching the subject.

Paired ideas move together.

Two things sharing a verb, or two verbs sharing a subject, stay bound together — never split across a line break.

The result: less effort spent reconstructing structure, more spent understanding meaning.

From an educator

I’ve had students have a visual ‘aha’ moment with a passage they’d tried before — in Cascade, they said it was ‘better.’

The science

Less effort. Greater understanding. More confidence.

Cascade is built on four decades of research into how our minds process language. Multiple peer-reviewed studies show it helps readers understand the same words with less effort. The benefits hold across ages, languages, and reading levels, including readers who’ve always found reading difficult.

Common questions

What does Cascade do to the text I read?

Cascade reshapes the structure of a sentence using line breaks and indentation to align subjects and verbs and show how clauses and phrases relate to the words they modify. It doesn’t rewrite, edit, or summarize a single word; it changes how a sentence is presented, not what it says. Think of it like a pair of eyeglasses that make written language easier to see clearly.

Is this the same as a "reader mode" or a simplification tool?

No. Reader modes strip away formatting, and simplification tools rewrite content to make it easier. Cascade doesn’t touch the words at all. It only adds structure.

What languages does Cascade support?

English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish today, with Mandarin in active development. (Character and usage limits vary by product. See the full FAQ.)

Is there research behind Cascade Format?

Cascade is backed by multiple studies across age groups and reading profiles, published in peer-reviewed journals. See the Research Portfolio.

What does the extension do?

Cascade reshapes the text on any page you’re reading — aligning subjects and verbs, indenting clauses and phrases underneath — so the structure of each sentence is easier to see. The words don’t change; how they’re arranged does. Want to see it first? Paste your own text into See Cascade and watch it reshape in real time.

How do I export Cascaded text?

For Cascade Reader, use the copy button and paste the text where you want it, or print the page as a PDF. For Cascade Explorer, copying and pasting won’t carry over the grammar highlighting. To keep those visualizations, save as a PDF instead.

Is this going to change what my child actually reads?

No. Cascade only reshapes how a sentence is presented (line breaks and indentation to show structure); it never rewrites, edits, or summarizes the underlying text. Think of Cascade like a pair of eyeglasses that make written language easier to understand.

Does a reader need to disclose anything to use Cascade?

No. Cascade is a standard reading option available to everyone. There is no diagnosis, disclosure, or accommodation request required.
